Umrah can be performed at any time of the year and takes a few hours once you reach Masjid al-Haram. This is a short overview — please learn the details from a scholar or a trusted Umrah guide before you travel.
1. Ihram at the Miqat
Before crossing the Miqat, take a bath (ghusl), wear the ihram garments (two white unstitched sheets for men; modest normal clothing for women), make your intention for Umrah and begin the Talbiyah: Labbaik Allahumma labbaik… See our Miqat guide.
2. Tawaf
At Masjid al-Haram, walk around the Kaaba seven times anti-clockwise, starting and ending at the Black Stone corner.
3. Two rak'ahs and Zamzam
Pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible (or anywhere in the mosque), then drink Zamzam water.
4. Sa'i
Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah.
5. Shave or trim the hair
Men shave their head or shorten their hair; women cut a small amount from the end of their hair. Your Umrah is now complete and the restrictions of ihram are lifted.
